Parents and Students,
The school year is well under way and I have really enjoyed getting to know my new students.
Over the past few weeks in P.E. we have been doing fitness testing, which includes the mile run, timed push-ups and sit-ups, bi-cep strength, and flexibility. We just started our football unit yesterday and will continue with the football unit for the next few weeks. On Monday, we covered the basics of throwing and catching and some students moved on to running patterns.
In Health, we have focused on our physical, mental, and social health. At the beginning of each class, students start by writing down a quote that pertains to that days lesson and then write their thoughts on the the quote. After the starter, we share healthy highlights. Students share healthy things they are doing in their lives with their classmates and then write them on a star, which is then displayed on the walls of our classroom. Below is a brief overview of the last few health classes.

Quote: Life is like a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.
–Albert Einstein
Take Away: Learn how to find balance in all aspects of health. *Continuous Learning
TRIANGLE-Physical, Mental/Emotional,Social
Take out a piece of paper and draw a triangle with three separate parts on each side of the paper.
Think about someone you would describe as healthy?
Who are they and why would you describe them as healthy?
List those characteristics that students suggest under each category (physical, mental, and social in the triangle.
Have students write at least two things that you do good in each area and two things that you could work on in each area.
Two goals (or things you can work on/get better at):
1.
2.
Two you do good in each area. Realistic goals:
1.
2.
Then shade in the area on your triangle that you think needs the most work.
CHALLENGE: Try to add some balance to your triangle. Go work on the area of your triangle that needs the most help. Try something new, make a new friend, read a new book, etc.

Quote: “The poorest man would not part with health for money, but the richest would gladly part with all their money for health.” -C.C. Colten
Take Away: Learn how to find balance in all aspects of health.
*Continuous Learning- learn how to make healthy choices now to ensure future health and longevity.
Physical- the care of your body and your body’s ability to meet the demands of daily living.
Mental- focus is on (you as a person) and your feelings about yourself. Ability to like yourself, express emotions in acceptable ways, and face the problems and stresses of day-to-day living.
Social- We are social beings. We need other people; this includes the way you get along with other people, making friends and keeping them, working and playing in a cooperative way, as well as seeking and lending support.
People are at certain points in their lives and choices can affect where you are on the continuum.
Students placed sticky notes where they thought they were are on the continuum.
Challenge: Make wise choices that will allow you to continually stay at the upper end of the continuum.

For the next several class periods we are watching a DVD called “Surviving High School,” which deals with issues such as: body image, drugs, alcohol, peer pressure, cliques, and character.
There is no school on Thursday or Friday! Have a great four day weekend:)
